Kerry Collins is out of retirement, having been signed  by the Colts to be Mannings back up should Mannings neck not be healed in time to start the season. Manning who signed a 5 year contract for $90 million dollars to stay in Indy won’t be playing any football at least until the first regular season game. Collins is a veteran quarter back with a wealth of experience and should be a good addition to the Colts. That being said, that just tells you how much confidence the team has in their backup quarterback Curtis Painter. I’m guessing not much, he may be the one needing NFL luggage tags. Hopefully none of this will be an issue and Manning will be ready to play. His streak of 227 consecutive starts is on the line. The only quarterback to play in more consecutive games is the old gunslinger Brett Favre.

The Sooners are ranked number one in the polls this year. Good bet is they won’t be the National Champions. Four times since 2000, the champs have started on higher than 13th. Look at Auburn last year where they were ranked and they won it all. They are probably happy not be be rated #1, because if you are you have little chance of winning it all. Oregon is rated #4 and they are my favorite to win it all. Of all the teams wearing NCAA football jerseys my least favorite is Ohio which is rated #14. To much going on at that college to just focus on football. No matter who wins it all, one things for sure, it promises to be an exciting season.

Michael Vick killed dogs. He hung them, beat them, drowned them and electrocuted them. All for fun and profit. He spent 18 months in federal prison for that crime. Now he gets to wear NFL jerseys again with a huge new contract. He signed a new deal with the Eagles that will make the Pro Bowl quarterback one of the highest paid players in the NFL. Only in American sports can you commit such a horrible crime and come out of prison and make millions. Vick is due to earn $16 million dollars this year, not bad for a dog killer who has been out of prison a couple of years. I hope he takes some of his millions and donates it to animal shelters around the country. We as fans gave him another chance, maybe he’ll give some animals another chance.

The NCAA started handing down the suspensions for Miamia’s football players. Jocory Harris is one of 8 players reprimanded. Harris along with Adewale Ojomo, Marcus Forston and Travis Benjamin all starters must sit out one game each. They must also pay back money for accepting gifts after enrolling in the school. Stephen Morris will be the starting quarterback when they open up the season against Maryland on Monday night. I think this will be a sense of relief for the Miami football team. Now they know how many players are being suspended and for how long. They still have plenty of determined  players to suit up in their NCAA football jerseys for the first game. I’m sure more sanctions are ahead but at least for now they are able to field a football team.

The NFL keeps drafting great college quarterbacks and trying to change them. If they draft these great quarterbacks for the gifts and abilities they showed in college, why do they keep trying to change them into something they are not. Fran Tarkenton, Steve Young and Roger Stauback were all great quarterbacks that could run around the field and buy their teams time. They could throw the ball as well. Their teams utilized those talents. Vince Young, Tim Tebow and Cam Newton were all great college quarterbacks with the same talents as those pro players mentioned above. So why do their teams not profit on those talents instead of trying to change them. None of the three will ever be a great pocket passer, their abilities lay in outrunning the pursuit and making plays on the run. To me this is a bigger threat than a pocket passer. You always know where the pocket passer is, but one that can run makes it more difficult on the defense. Just because you put NFL apparel on a college quarterback you can no more change him than changing the spots on a leopard. I hope all succeed in the NFL, but if they don’t make it, don’t blame them, blame the teams that drafted them.

My favorite time of year is upon us, the start of the college football season. Although I watch many sports, I enjoy college football the most. Nothing matches the game day atmosphere of college football. I love the bands and the team mascots. If you ever have a chance, go see a CU football game in Boulder Colorado. They may have the best mascot in the game. They actually run out a live buffalo onto the field. Coolest thing I have ever seen in college football. I am a gamer on Saturday’s wearing my NCAA apparel and watching the game for the competition. Even though many schools are being investigated and it has put a sour spot on the sport, I still love it for what it is, a game.

LSU will be missing their biggest play maker and fastest runner when it plays Oregon. Russell Shepard has been suspended. Also starting quarterback Jordon Jefferson and linebacker Josh Johns were suspended indefinitely 1 hour after warrants were issued for their arrest. The two will be charged with second degree felonies from a bar fight at Shady’s bar. What were they doing in a bar when they have football and classes to focus on. Give credit to Miles the head coach, he suspended them right away. Senior Jarrett Lee will be the new starting quarterback and he’s really good. In a stretch of 8 games in 2008 he threw 10 interceptions, 5 returned for touchdowns. LSU like all other teams need players with better moral values to wear their NCAA football jerseys.

The Cleveland Browns have finally found a good quarterback. That would be their 3rd round choice last year, Colt McCoy. Not only will he be a good quarterback but he will be a great one. He will be the best they have had since Kosar retired. The Browns have been through a ton of quarterbacks that were not good. They have only mad the playoffs once, and have had only 2 winning records since rejoining the league in 1999. McCoy is proving to be a great fine. In two preseason games, he has no interceptions and four touchdowns, with 1 out of every pass going for a touchdown. Hs passer rating is 132.6 which is fantastic and he is completing 68% of his passes. So sit back Brown fans and enjoy the show, the Browns won’t be sending out any NFL luggage tags to bring in another quarterback, you have a winner in him.

Historical rivalries will always be a vital part of college football. Football is an emotional game with violent hits that get the enthusiasm going in fans. Some schools have big bonfires, others have large rallies. That is all fine and good fun. It gets out of hand when fans start destroying property or getting into fist fights. It’s hard to believe that fans can get this emotional just because of a football game. Take Harvey Updyke Jr. who is accused of poising the two historic oak trees that guard Auburn Universities entrance. What does this accomplice, it certainly won’t help your team win any games. Just because you wear different NCAA apparel than your rival does not give you the right to be this much of an idiot. It’s time for fans to just enjoy the game for what it is, entertainment. It is not life and death

Number 1 draft pick Cam Newton of Carolina was completely outplayed by second round draft pick Andy Dalton of Cincinnati. The Bengals beat Newton’s Panther’s 24-13. Newton is going to have a hard time reaching NFL stardom with a quarterback rating of 44.8. He rushed for 41 yards in the first half, not what you want your quarterback to do, that’s what you have running backs for. His counterpart Dalton a much less regarded quarterback did the opposite of Newton. Instead of taking a step back, he took a giant leap forward. His quarterback rating was 107.5 way more than twice as good as Newtons. Just goes to show you, it doesn’t matter what NFL jerseys you’re wearing, how much you get paid or where you get picked, talent is a tough thing to decide in the draft.
