Do You Believe in Curses

Do you believe in curses. If you were a pro player would you want to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated or on the front cover of the Madden video game. Both have reputations of bringing bad luck to players. Now I don’t believe in curses, but if I was a player, I would rather have my mug printed on NFL car floor mats and be stepped on every day than take the chance of being on Sports Illustrated or the Madden video game. Even though I don’t believe in curses, I just would not take the chance. Peyton Hillis of the Browns says he has had a terrible year since being voted to appear on the Madden video game front cover. Maybe even talking about this has cursed me , so I’m gonna go now and throw some salt over my shoulder and rub a red head for luck.

When quarterback Kyle Orton played for the Broncos, he was not loved by the fans. Everybody wanted Tebow. Eventually the team traded him to Kansas City. Now Orton is coming back to play his former team. He will be hated more after this game because he and the Chiefs will beat the Broncos and keep them out of the playoffs if the Chargers beat Oakland. If you want some really cheap NFL merchandise, buy Orton’s Bronco jersey on Monday. The fans, John Elway and John Fox wanted him out of town and now they may all look like fools if he comes back and beats them. I hope Orton succeeds just to see what happens in Denver the following day.

Another NFL Record Falls

Congratulations Drew Brees. You are the new owner of an NFL record. In the Saints 45-16 win over Atlanta, Brees of the Saints threw for 307 yards, beating Marino’s record by 3 yards. With one more regular season game left, that number could climb. But here’s the catch. Will the record stand for more than 1 week. If Brees does not play next week and sits on the sideline wearing his NFL fitted cap because the game means nothing, there is another quarterback who could pass him. Tom Brady of New England is only 190 yards behind him and you know he will throw for more yards than that. My guess is Brees will play and hold onto the record which has stood since 1984.

As far a Christmas gifts go, Tim Tebow’s NFL gifts to the Bills was a big one. He gave them 4 nice footballs, 2 that were returned for touchdowns. Now the Broncos are in a do or die situation. Beat the Chiefs and they are in the playoffs. In the last 2 games, the opposing teams have figured Tebow and the Denver offense out. Shut down the running game and make him throw, and throw he cannot. If the Broncos are going to go anywhere next year, and they won’t this year even if they make the playoffs, someone needs to teach him how to throw to the right people.

All pro sports teams should not play on Christmas Day. That includes Basketball and Football. There are two reasons. One, the players and coaches should be able to spend the day with their families. Two, is that guys don’t need to watch sports on that day. They should be spending time with their families. But sports being what it is, and that’s a multiple billion dollar business, it won’t happen. Think how you would feel if your boss said sorry, you are working Christmas day because I want to make tons of money. You would not like it and I’ll bet all the people it takes to run a game, the T.V. crews, the vendors and everybody else doesn’t either. The NFL toys with all these people, bet they never took a survey, but then again why, they don’t care.

The NFL is getting sued by 3 former players for head injuries.  I feel sorry for these guys if they have head problems, but they knew the risk when they entered the league. Besides, how can they blame the NFL for all of it. These 3 guys have been playing football all their lives, probably starting when they were around eight years old. They have been getting their heads banged in little league, junior high, high school and college for 4 years before entering the NFL. NFL flags get thrown all the time for leading with the head or hitting another player in the head. Just what do they expect the league to do.  So I say sorry guys, you took the risk and the multiple millions that went with it. You mad your bed, so now lay in it and blame

Ohio State now knows the penalties it will get from the NCAA for breaking rules. What they got was a year of probation, lost scholarships and banned from any bowl games in 2112. Ohio States new coach Urban Myere’s who lead Florida to 2 National Championships must be disappointed. Ohio State said they were disappointed and surprised by the NCAA’s decision. This is what happens when you don’t monitor your program properly, you get punished. What started this was 8 players grabbing $14,000 dollars in cash and getting tattoos in exchange for rings, jerseys and other NCAA gear.

If my count is correct, there are now 35 bowl games. Of those 35, maybe 6 hold my interest. In my opinion, there are way to many bowl games. Really, who has an interest in the Famous Potato Bowl or the Beef, O Brady’s Bowl. I wonder what their NCAA logos look like, maybe a picture of a potato. What the heck are they and will anybody attend the games except for the players.  Playing these meaningless games is like giving a kid a 15 place ribbon for just being in the race. If you not in first, it just does not matter. We all know it’s about the money with all these bowl games. It must be a tough job for a coach to get his team fired up to play in a game that nobody watches and means absolutely nothing.

Just goes to show you what happens when a great team meets a very average team. Meaning the Patriots verses the Broncos. Meaning 41-23. Although the Broncos came out smoking in the first quarter, they completely fell apart in the second quarter with 3 fumbles. Tom Brady completely outplayed Tebow. There were to be no 4th quarter miracles in this game. The Patriots are in the playoffs and the Broncos most likely will be. One team is ready and one is not. Put on your thinking cap and see if you can figure it out. Here’s a hint. With all those NFL jerseys out there with numbers, number 12 is worth a whole lot more than number 15

Although the NHL has made improvements in the game to make it more fun to watch, they still need more scoring to keep it exciting. Would you rather watch a football game with a score of  3-6 or 34-28. What’s more fun, a baseball game with a score of  2-1 or 12-10. You get my point, the more points, the more exciting the game. Even though NHL players are faster than ever, and equipment is better than ever, the scoring remains low. I may have to take out my NHL bedding to take a nap during the game if they don’t fix it. Maybe they should make the goal bigger or the goalies smaller, that might fix it. But fix it they must if the NHL want to keep its fans.
